Adding citations (APA, MLA and Chicago)

When a passage matches a source, the card can turn it into a quotation with an in-text citation and add the source to your reference list, in the style you choose.

Styles

Silvertext writes citations in APA, MLA and Chicago. Pick the style in the report toolbar; the pick applies to every citation in the document, and switching later rewrites them all.

What Cite does

  1. The matched words are placed inside quotation marks, with the marks and punctuation the document's language and region use.
  2. An in-text citation is added after the quote: author and year in APA, author and page in MLA, a note in Chicago. When the source has no named author, a shortened title in quotes stands in.
  3. The source is added to the reference list at the end of the document. If your document already has a References, Works Cited or Bibliography section, the entry is added to it and nothing else in that section is touched.

The reference list

Entries are built from what the source page provides: author, title, site or publication, date, and the address. A missing date is written as n.d. in the style's form. Entries are kept in the style's order. Silvertext only ever adds or removes the lines it wrote itself; your own entries are never edited.

Removing a citation

Undo the citation from the card or with Undo. The quotation marks, the in-text citation and the reference entry are removed together.

Checking existing citations

Citations already in your document are checked against the chosen style. A citation in the wrong form gets its own card with the corrected version.
