Languages we stand behind
English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian and Dutch. Every check follows the language each sentence is actually written in, so a paper that mixes languages, or quotes a passage in another one, is handled sentence by sentence: findings are written in the document's language and fixes keep it.
Other languages
Most other languages written with spaces between words run through the same checks, with less certainty in the grammar and style passes. The plagiarism match works in any language, since it compares words against published pages.
Not yet supported
Languages written without spaces between words, such as Chinese and Japanese, are not supported yet. A document mostly in one of them is refused with a message naming the supported languages, rather than checked badly.
Tips
- Keep quotations in their original language; the citation keeps the language's quote marks.
- If a check reports the wrong language for a passage, the passage is usually very short or mostly names. Findings on it are safe to ignore.
