Spelling and grammar
Misspellings, agreement, tense, articles, prepositions, punctuation, capitalisation and spacing. Each finding is a card with the corrected form; Fix all accepts every remaining one in the category.
Locale conventions
Quote marks, the placement of commas and periods around them, spacing before punctuation, and similar conventions follow the language and region of each passage: straight or curly quotes, guillemets in French, low-high quotes in German, and so on. Set your writing region in Settings if the default is not yours.
Clarity and word choice
Suggestions rather than errors: wordy or unclear phrasing, weak or off-register word choices, passive constructions where an active one reads better. They are marked as suggestions, never included in Fix all, and never raised on a passage that matched a source.
What is deliberately left alone
- Proper nouns, code, addresses and reference-list entries.
- Quotations: the words inside quote marks are someone else's and are not corrected.
- Deliberate style, where it is consistent. A document written in British spelling is checked as British; mixed spellings get a card.
Languages
The pass follows the language each sentence is written in, so a paper that mixes languages is checked sentence by sentence. See the languages article for what is supported.
